An A-Z Guide to Hotel Web Design

    hotel

Staying at a hotel is all about the experience. However surprisingly many hotels repeatedly fail when it comes to the user experience of their websites. Here we have put together a handy A-Z checklist that considers the dos and don'ts of hotel web design.

Analytics: Understanding how visitors use your website is important to its success. Tools like Google Analytics allow you to identify who is using your website and how, enabling you to continually update and improve your website.

Bookings: The main reason you want people to visit your site is to make a booking, so make it easy for them to do so. Offer multiple ways to book (e.g. by telephone, email and through your website) and make contact details visible throughout the site.

Content: Keep your content fresh and up-to-date! Websites with fresh content are not only more interesting to visitors but are more likely to be recognised by Google. Adding a blog, special offers and promotions, sharing customer reviews and including your Twitter feed are all ways to keep your content fresh.

Digital presence: Consumers are relying more and more on digital methods to research and book services, including hotel accommodation, so it's important to be where your customers are!

Engagement: An engaging website will not only increase the time spent on your site, but will undoubtedly encourage visitors to return.

Facebook: Facebook is an extremely useful tool for businesses. It enables you to connect with current and prospective customers (there are over 1 billion people using Facebook!), build relationships and reach new people.

Google Map: Embed Google Maps to make it easy for your visitors to find your location.

Homepage: Visitors to your website will want to find the information they are looking for quickly, therefore relevant information should be easily accessible from your homepage, including the ability to select a preferred location if you have more than one hotel.

Images: Images can really influence a visitor's perception of your hotel and their decision to book with you. Display clean, fresh and up-to-date images of your rooms, facilities and interior/exterior of your hotel.

Journey: When developing your website consider the typical path a visitor is likely to take to reach their goal. Identifying the user journey will enable you to make your website easier and more engaging to use.

Keywords: Write quality content that reads naturally for visitors. Of course include your main keywords in the text, but your content should not be there solely for search engines.

Local search: 97% of consumers search online for local businesses. Be where they are and submit a free listing with Google Places.

Mobile: With more and more people using their smartphones and tablets to browse the internet (typically 30% of visitors to websites do so from a mobile device), you need to ensure that your website is mobile optimised.

Navigation: The navigation of your website is important to the overall experience of the user. It is like a road map that directs visitors where to go, and should therefore be kept clear and simple to enable them to easily achieve their goal.

Opt-in: Encourage visitors to opt-in for further communication, such as newsletters and special offers, which helps to build an on-going relationship with your customers.

Pinterest: Add a Pinterest share button to your website and/or blog, enabling visitors to share your images, directing traffic back to your site. 80% of all 'pins' are 'repinned', making this an easy way to get noticed and grow your following.

Questions: Visitors to your website will be looking for specific information about your hotel, such as room rates, facilities, check-in times etc. Think about what they want to know and make it easy for them to find. Enable them to ask questions and ensure you respond promptly to avoid losing their custom.

Responsive design: Nowadays more hotel bookings are made online than not, and with people using different devices to browse the internet it is important to ensure your website is fully optimised. Responsive design allows you to create one site to fit all.

Social media: Research shows that hotels using social media experience significantly more website traffic than those that don't. Used correctly, social media will enable you to drive engagement, share information and promote your hotel and facilities. And don't forget that users like to share their experiences with their friends and followers, ultimately enabling you to reach new people.

Testimonials: Testimonials can help establish the credibility of your hotel, so why not ask your guests to leave a review and display them on your website.

Usability: The usability of your website will determine whether visitors return. Put simply if visitors can't use your website they won't stay. Consider whether your site is accessible to all users, how long it takes to download, does it display correctly in different browsers, and can users access the information they are looking for?

Video: Videos are a powerful way to show what you have to offer. Creating simple and effective videos (e.g. on TouTube) can help tell a story in more ways than text and images can. Plus videos are extremely popular with search engines!

Web pages: Web pages should be valuable to visitors, providing them with the information they are seeking. Keep them clean, fresh and up-to-date, avoiding too much text. Busy web pages will only deter visitors from browsing your content.

eXperience: Staying at a hotel is all about the experience, therefore the user experience of your website is really important. Make their experience hassle free, enabling visitors to accomplish their goals simply and efficiently.

You're staff: You're staff are important to the overall experience of your hotel, so why not provide a personal welcome and introduce them on your website.

Zero complications: Check your website regularly to ensure there are no complications, as this will only deter visitors from returning to your site. Remove out-of-date content, broken links, expired special offers and outdated menus and room rates.
